This constitutes a new dwelling house formed from two mews flats and garages within Edinburgh's New Town Conservation Area. A complete restoration of the accommodation was required, with new stair access to the open plan upper floor living area and bedrooms. At ground level a new garden room extends from the kitchen/dining area into the raised garden at the rear.
This is a new conservatory extension to a studio at first floor level within Edinburgh's Murrayfield Conservation Area. It is built off a steel frame which straddles raised garden beds and was detailed to fit between old walnut and birch trees. This has resulted in a rather sophisticated tree house, filled with dappled light and the garden theme is further enhanced by steel leaves welded to the structure at significant junctions.
extension of ground floor living areas - opening out onto a private garden, at Blackhall....
....or to wide angle horizon, at Musselburgh....
....or developed attic spaces, providing bright open living accommodation....or gently-lit bedroom areas, like this one at Murrayfield....
....or a traditional bungalow, extended to provide an enlarged kitchen/dining area where new spaces are defined by a change of level, as at Craigmount.
....or a rural example as at Garve. This is the complete refurbishment of a derelict croft where the existing roof was removed and the existing wall heads heightened to provide wide external roof overhangs. These provide sheltered viewing of the southern strath and comfort to summer swallows. The additional volume allowed for a mezzanine sleeping area served by a spiral staircase.
Although I now choose to specialise in residential projects I have previously built major works for diverse clients in the Judiciary, Education, Social Works and Police (right) and a miscellany of building types in the private commercial world. I have assisted in Government decision making by preparing feasibility studies and investment appraisals for the Royal Museum of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland. However the interest in residential work has been at the heart of the practice since its inception when I designed and patented a method of timber construction which was developed from post-graduate study in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. This interest moved on to an early involvement with timber frame construction in this country and the associated logic of standardised building elements.
