  ARCHIE MACALISTER

I graduated in Architecture from Edinburgh College of Art and two scholarships
allowed me to travel widely in Europe, while a British Council award provided the
opportunity for extended post graduate study in Krakow in Southern Poland. I also
worked for some time in Denmark and Ghana before returning to Edinburgh where
I set up the practice of Gilmour & MacAlister.

Influences
Architecture, the public art, has linkages at many points with the arts generally,
and in my case an interest in Scottish Poetry led to my designing and illustrating
the limited edition of George Campbell Hay's great sea poem 'Seeker, Reaper'.
This book was published by The Saltire Society in 1988 and a few copies are still
available. Contact me for more information.
I have also illustrated various works by Kenneth White, while another series of
illustrations document an allied interest in places associated with the Loch Fyne
herring industry of yesteryear. Most of this work was exhibited in solo exhibitions
at the Royal Incorporation of Architects Gallery and on a later occasion at the
Demarco Gallery in Edinburgh. The making of 'Seeker, Reaper' is covered in a
profile in 'The Scottish Book Collector'. Other commissions include that by the
Scottish Postal Board for illustrations to mark the centenary of the Crofters Act.
